Riyadh is the capital city of Saudi Arabia . It is located about 2,000 feet above sea level in the middle of the country, about 1,000 km from the Red Sea in the west and 500 km from the Arabian Gulf in the east.
Riyadh 's summers are extremely hot and very dry. The temperature can reach an average of 45°C while the winters are pleasantly warm during the day and chilly at night. Riyadh does have rain from time to time, but rarely. Riyadh 's population recently passed 4 million.
Riyadh has a lot to offer in shopping, restaurants and cafes. There are Western-type shops, shopping malls and supermarkets.
You will find transactions are conducted at a more leisurely pace than in the States or Europe . It is not uncommon for the merchant to offer a cup of tea or coffee while you make up your mind buying an item. Coffee shops, bakeries, dry cleaning shops, tailoring and convenience stores are almost everywhere in Riyadh .
There's also a flavor of “Old Riyadh” in some places, where you can buy spices, gold, fabric, clothing, fresh fish, meat products and other items.
